The exciting thing about recording and cataloging natural sounds is how you get nice, unexpected surprises. I was up early recently one spring day and did not have any real plans to record, until i stepped outside with my coffee to see what the weather was like and was nicely surprised with the light, steady spring rain that was falling in my yard; during the whole time this energetic carolina wren kept on singing through the rain. I rain, got my recorder and recorded a full hour of this peaceful pattering. You hear the drops hitting the concrete patio, the shingled overhang and a plastic chair. Me squeezing a crumpled bag of doritos, recorded with an sm57 going into an m-audio mobilepre usb audio interface. I recorded this because i needed a good rubber stretching sound, but couldn't find one that looped well. When i crumpled the bag up to throw it away, i realized it kind of sounds like what i wanted, and with some eqing and clever layering i could get a sound that's pretty close to what i wanted. I fluttered a plastic spatula in front of my tlm-103 in the studio. It's recorded at 96k, 32 bits, so you can stretch it or pitch it any way you want. My swiss army knife of sounds: i recorded myself falling over a plastic stool for an episode of our comedy podcast, mission: rejected. It was supposed to be a one-time sound, where a clumsy analyst named stuart gilligan trips while getting out of his chair. I've been recording some sounds for a an upcoming project which led me to recording the underside of the lid of a salad spinner and dangling a small plastic tab on it as it spun. It wasn't my intention but it sounds a bit like an old film projector. You can get some interesting results with this clip by messing a bit with the eq which is what i'll be doing for the finished project. This recording was made using a sound devices mixpre6ii and a stereo pair of fel em172 mics. Low cut on the sd which in basic mode is 80hz (i think). Clean, dry recording of a roughly half-filled metal can (the ribbed kind used for most canned food - probably steel, tin, or a blend of the two) containing dry oatmeal being shaken. A variety of forces and speeds were used to create a diverse assortment of sounds. Originally recorded specifically for canned oatmeal sounds, but could easily work for shaken cans containing most kinds of tiny, dry granules such as rice, nuts, grains, etc. A metal can was used for the unique, metallic timbre it produces - a glass jar or plastic container would sound different.
